Best Decorating Tips for Large Spaces

Posted on September 9th, 2019 by haynesbrosfurniture.

When confronted with a large room, especially a large empty room, many homeowners feel overwhelmed. No matter how many items you place in the room, space still appears empty, and it can seem like the result you have in mind will never truly be reflected. But decorating a large room can be fun since it isn’t near as limited as a small room is. After all, who doesn’t love more space?

Designate zones

Before you get started, decide what the room is going to look like. Keeping the end in mind will make it far easier to accomplish your goal, so start with a decorating theme and work from there. Have a picture of the finished room in mind and work toward the finished product.

Large rooms can function as so much more than just a large sitting area, but you might have to get creative with how to best utilize the size or shape of the room you have. Identify several possible functional areas within the room, such as a conversation zone (or two or three!), a media zone, an area for a writing desk, a console or a game table, a dining area or perhaps a reading area.

Use color

Keep your colors consistent when painting or repainting your large space. Choose one or two main colors and stick to them, using contrasting shades to compliment the walls. Top it all off with neutral decorations to draw out the color and make the room come together.

If you have a high ceiling, you may want to try a simple trick to cozy up your room. If you paint the ceiling a shade or two or even several shades darker than your walls, your ceiling won’t seem as tall, and your room might feel snugger and cozier.

Bold is best

Bigger is better when furnishing large spaces. Small pieces of furniture will look awkward in a large room, so focus on bigger pieces that take up more floor space. Things like Artwork and accessories in a big room should also be bigger and bolder.

If it is within your budget, consider investing in architectural elements such as columns or moldings to enhance and furnish your large space. These items can work more effectively than furniture to create warmth and beauty in a large room.

Cozy up space with layers

If your room feels cold, sound echoes or if the vibe is cozy enough, it might not be the size of the room, but instead you might need more layers. Add area rugs, hang curtains, add baskets for more texture and sound absorption and accessories to help soften the spaces.

The goal is to make the large space warm and welcoming, not cluttered and overwhelming. Placing your pieces of furniture carefully and adding a large rug for color and décor all serve this goal and create a cozy space you will enjoy spending time in.

Create individual spaces

Working with a large space can be an overwhelming experience, but decorating several small spaces is much less intimidating. Breaking that large space into smaller and easier pieces is the key to success.

Placement is important too. When furnishing your large room, keep at least a foot of space between the furniture and the surrounding walls. This will allow the furniture to float in space while making the room appear warmer and more inviting.

Don’t forget that basic design rules still apply! A poorly arranged and decorated large room is just as ugly as a poorly decorated small room. These large room design tips should have you decorating all your big, empty spaces with style.
