The Best Trees To Plant For Arbor Day

Posted on April 15th, 2020 by haynesbrosfurniture.

Every year on the last Friday in April, people all over the United States celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees. Much like Earth Day, Arbor Day is a chance for us to look at the environment and make efforts to improve it. Not only does the planting of trees reduce the effects of fossil fuel emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide, sulfurous dioxide, and nitrous oxide, as a homeowner there are a lot of additional benefits. With a little planning, you can create a landscape that will keep you cool in the summer, protect you from winds, and increase your property values.

When designing your personal forest, there are several important factors to consider, and we have laid them out for you here:

  1. Choose your tree type wisely, taking into close consideration what will be above it. For example, you would not want to plant a very tall tree in an area where its branches would extend into things like electrical wires.
  2. Investigate the way your tree grows and know how wide it will be so you can plant it far enough away from structures and other trees.
  3. Deciduous or Evergreen? Will your tree lose its leaves in the winter and if it does, will those leaves fall in a place that becomes inconvenient for your neighbors or yourself?
  4. What sort of space are you filling and what’s your purpose? A columnar tree will take up very little ground space, but a round tree will provide the best shade.
  5. Soil and Sun. Make sure the area where you are planting your tree is the appropriate place for the tree type. Investigate what types of trees flourish in what quality of light and make sure that the soil is the correct balance for your tree’s needs.
  6. If you choose to plant fruit trees, make sure you select their location carefully. Some people can be very sensitive to the mess that can sometimes occur when the fruit falls from them in large amounts and becomes an eyesore or walking hazard.
  7. Hardiness Zone. Be sure to check with your local tree board or forestry department to find out what types of trees grow best in your climate and what types of trees will fail to thrive.

Now that you have a list of things to consider, here are some resources from the Arbor Day Foundation, to help you do your research and create a perfect, home reforestation project. Just click on the highlighted words to access all the information you need.
