Wallpaper 101

Posted on February 12th, 2018 by haynesbrosfurniture.

If your idea of wallpaper comes from the 1960s and 1970s, you might need to update your thinking. Modern wallpaper trends are far more attractive, and far more flexible, than the wallpaper back then.

There are plenty of creative ways to use wallpaper in every room of your home. You can start by giving your old tired rooms a four-wall treatment, covering those bare walls with a simple pattern or texture. For other rooms, a touch of boldness may be in order. Once again, the right wallpaper pattern can brighten up space and give your room a breath of fresh air.

If you are looking for something unusual and unique, try covering just half the wall with wallpaper. This is a great way to achieve a daring new look without overwhelming your chosen living space.

Wallpaper is also perfect for creating an accent wall. The right wallpaper can create a focal point in the room, your eyes will be instantly drawn to that striking focal point, and you can build the rest of the room around it.

If you have a bookcase in the bedroom or den, try adding wallpaper to the back of it. This is a fun and creative use for wallpaper, and the perfect way to brighten up what would otherwise be a utilitarian but boring piece of furniture.

Steps to Hanging Wallpaper

No matter how you use wallpaper, it is important to use the right hanging techniques. It is far better to take your time and do it right the first time than hurry through and do it all over again. Here are the steps you will use to hang your wallpaper right the first time.

  • Be sure the walls are clean and free of any debris. The surface should be smooth before you start hanging your wallpaper.
  • Spackle the wall to smooth out any holes or rough areas. These rough spots could impact the final finish of your wallpaper.
  • Remove all faceplates, outlet covers, and socket covers before starting to hang the wallpaper. Be sure to turn off the power as well – better safe than sorry.

If you are hanging the wallpaper on all four walls, you will ideally want to start in the most inconspicuous corner of the room. Examples of inconspicuous starting points include the back corner of the room, behind the door, or behind a large piece of furniture.

The most crucial step in the wallpaper hanging process is making sure the initial strip is straight and level. Do not try to eyeball it – use a level to make sure that first strip is perfect. The quality of that first strip will impact the rest of the room, so take your time and do it right. Once that first strip is perfect, you can continue with the steps listed below.

  • Place the level at the mark, then draw a straight vertical line, also known as a plumb line.
  • Follow the same procedure each time you reach a corner or start on a new wall. Before you know it, the entire room will be covered with beautiful wallpaper.

Whether you use wallpaper in a single room or the whole house, you can find a wide variety of bold patterns, fun colors, and amazing designs. So, grab your level and let your imagination be your guide.
