All the Best Reasons to Switch to a Standing Desk, TODAY!

Posted on January 22nd, 2020 by haynesbrosfurniture.

It is common knowledge that living a sedentary lifestyle, one of little movement, either sitting or lying down most of the time, can lead to a cluster of conditions including high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and obesity. Standing while working has obvious health benefits, but the question we raise today is, “Can it improve almost every other aspect of our lives, as well?!”

The long and impressive history of the standing desk and many recent studies may answer that question with a resounding “Yes!”

In 2018, the United Kingdom published a study on Britain’s Stand More AT Work program. A group of office workers was divided into a test group and a control group. The test group was given an adjustable, standing desk along with instruction and coaching. Twelve months later, those individuals with the new workstations were found to have spent less time sedentary, but also reported that their daily anxiety levels decreased, while their work engagement and quality of life increased.

It is easy to look at these new, trendy, adjustable contraptions and think, “Why didn’t someone think of this sooner?”

It turns out they did.

Standing desks, seen now as a new fad loved by hipsters and techies, are, in fact, simply a “reinvention of the wheel.” The list of visionaries that embraced the habit of standing while working throughout history is long and very impressive.

If you need any more convincing as to the benefits of standing while working, check out these historical visionaries who swore by their benefits.

  1. Ever heard of the Mona Lisa? It turns out Leonardo Da Vinci painted her while he stood at his standing desk. Many historians say he did nearly all his work standing. He cannot necessarily be given credit for inventing it, but he is one of the earliest people to be witnessed using one. Da Vinci, while standing, sketched world-changing concepts such as parachutes, flying machines and armored vehicles. Although one cannot definitively attribute his accomplishments to working while standing, many believe his work speaks for itself.

  1. Thomas Jefferson seems to be the first American to utilize a standing desk. Author of the Declaration of Independence and our 3rd president, designed what he called a “tall desk.” The cabinet maker who created the design gave it six legs for stability, a slanted top that could be adjusted with a ratchet stand, and a surface area large enough for a folio. It is said that Jefferson used this desk to draw up famous architectural blueprints.

  1. To truly illustrate the great, mental benefits of a standing workstation, enter the accomplishments of Charles Dickens, Earnest Hemmingway, and Winston Churchill. All three were outspoken concerning the benefits of standing while working. Charles Dickens’ workspace was described as having “books all round, up to the ceiling and down to the ground; a standing-desk at which he writes, and all manner of comfortable, easy chairs.” Winston Churchill was commonly witnessed doing his important writing at his standing desk and Ernest Hemingway was described as a homemade invention, near his bed, fashioned from a bookcase.
