Rooms that felt bright and outdoorsy during spring and summertime, suddenly feel cramped and dark.

As Floridians, we crave the light and ample space of our normal, indoor/outdoor lives. Unfortunately, some of us live in spaces that do not lend themselves to our need for room to breathe. That does not mean there are not things we can implement that trick our eyes into thinking that our homes are larger than they are.

Enter the most popular, current reemergence in design: Mid Century Modern.

With its sleek lines, leggy grace, organic shapes, reflective surfaces, and pops of bright color, Mid Century Modern design sits low to the ground, seemingly floating in a room and allowing light and air to circulate. All these elements combine to create the perfect design style to open a small and cramped space.

Keeping a Low Profile

Mid-century modern design in furniture is commonly low to the floor, creating a sense of openness in a room. The openness comes from creating larger areas above the furniture while also keeping the small spaces below the pieces clear with nearly invisible, spindle legs on large pieces like sofas and desks.

Transparency

Our eyes tell us that if we can see through it, it is not taking up any space. Employing glass and open, geometric shapes give you both the surface area you need while keeping a room looking spacious and light. Choosing something like this table which imitates Isamu Noguchi’s 1948, mid-century modern design, is a great choice for small spaces.

Leggy and Lean

Mid-century modern’s Butterfly Chair and Wishbone Chair are both perfect examples of how this style can keep a room looking large, despite its actual dimensions. Low to the ground with a lot of open space for light to filter through, these chairs provide comfort, style, and trick your eye in exactly the way you want.

Reflect and Grow

We all know that adding mirrors to a room is a great way of opening a space, but the mid-century modern design takes it a step further. Elements of a great mirror in this style strip away the heavy frames and replace them with woven or geometric accents that are often made of more reflective materials, themselves. These fantastic accessories can cast extra light and create a sense of roominess with their clean and open appearance.

Making your small rooms feel bright and spacious does not have to involve anything complicated or time-consuming. With a few well-placed changes to your decorating style, you can make a huge difference, even in the tiniest places.

If you have any other questions about design styles, new furniture trends, or creating something fresh and new in your home, please come by one of our showrooms or visit our website at https://www.haynesbrosfurniture.com/

During the winter months, when we have fewer opportunities to go out and play, the walls seem to close in on us.
