Dorm Room To-Dos

Posted on May 9th, 2018 by haynesbrosfurniture.

Whether you are headed off to college for the first time or returning to school after a long hot summer, it is time to think about decorating (or redecorating) your dorm room. No matter where you attend school, your dorm room is your home away from home, and it should feel like your own special place.

There are plenty of great ways to make your dorm room feel more like home, from adding a few personal touches to allowing it to reflect your unique taste and style. Here are a few tips to help you make your dorm room feel like home.

Photo String Lights

Photo string lights create a wonderful personal touch, allowing you to bring a little bit of home into your dorm room. You can hang a wide variety of photos, from candid shots with your friends to portraits featuring the family members back home. Best of all, you do not have to buy a lot of frames or take up a lot of wall space, to create your own personal portrait gallery. Photo string lights are perfect for shared spaces since you can personalize and customize your side of the dorm room without disturbing your neighbor.

Contact Paper

Contact paper is every college student’s best friend, and you should not leave home without it. With this removable wallpaper, you can personalize your dorm room to your heart’s delight, giving it a homey feel all your own. You can also use contact paper on the furniture, lining your dresser drawers and personalizing your new living space.

Potted Plants

Nothing brightens up a dull dorm room like a few potted plants, so pick your favorites and bring the beauty of nature to the great indoors. You do not have to have a green thumb to enjoy the beauty of potted plants; there are plenty of hardy varieties that will withstand even the roughest treatment. You can even decorate the pots yourself, or choose cork pots that can be adorned with push pins and reminder notes from class.

Twinkle Lights

Blinking lights are not just for holidays anymore; they are perfect for decorating and brightening up your dorm room. Easier on the eyes than traditional lights, twinkle lights provide illumination while you study and create a warm and cozy atmosphere in your dorm room.

Floor Cushions

You can make your own floor cushions out of repurposed materials, including old t-shirts and fabric, or you can buy them cheaply off campus. Wherever you get them, you can enjoy your floor cushions in many ways, from mere decorating to creating a new place to sit, lie down and study. You can even invite your friends over for study parties, and everyone can have their own special study cushion.

Corkboards

Every dorm room needs a corkboard to display reminders or important notes, and you can make your own for just a few bucks. Once your DIY corkboard is in place, you can decorate it any way you want: adding family photographs, favorite poems, song lyrics, and anything else you like. You can also use your corkboard to organize your life by posting your class schedule and due dates.

Make Candle Mason Jars

Mason jars make great candles, and you can create your own scents and decorate your dorm room with style. Decorate your mason jar candles with washi tape or paint, and keep things safe by using artificial tea lights instead of the real thing.

DIY Hanging Planter

You can take the beauty of houseplants a step further with your own DIY hanging planter. By using a variety of found materials like rope, old shirts, and whatever else you can get your hands on, you can create a stylish planter that will look right at home in your dorm room. When you are done, you can use artificial plants to decorate the planter, so you do not even have to water.

Crate Shelves

You will have a lot of books to store, so consider installing quality shelving. If you have a few crates, you can create your own DIY bookcase without spending another cent. Just paint the crates in wild colors, or use wallpaper to decorate them. You can even hang your shelves on the wall, creating a stylish and useful organizational system you and your dormmate will love.

Curtains

The right curtains can make a world of difference in your dorm room, so let your creativity be your guide. Curtains in the doorway create the illusion of privacy, giving you your own place to study or just hang out. At the same time, these dorm room curtains allow easy access to your roommates so everyone can enjoy the same space.

Dorm life can be a lot of fun, especially when you know how to decorate your special space. The tips listed above can help you create a wonderful homey feel in your dorm room; one you will be happy to come back to when classes are done for the day.
