3 Tips for Bringing the Holidays to Your Airbnb

Posted on December 10th, 2019 by haynesbrosfurniture.

During the past several years, we have all seen the way Airbnb has brought vacation home rentals into the mainstream. Different from some hotels where you are stuffed into cookie-cutter rooms with no more than a bed and a comfortable chair or two, an Airbnb can give you all the comforts of home. Airbnb has opened up the possibility of living a near-normal life, in a different place, to all of us.

This can be particularly wonderful during the holidays, but what about our festive holiday decor? Do we go without or is there a great way to bring all our usual holiday cheer into a temporary space?

The short answer is “Yes!” and here are some simple, safe, and cost-effective ways to make that happen!

 Prepare ahead

Any shopping while traveling becomes more costly than normal, for various reasons. When you are in a less than familiar setting, sometimes you are unsure where to find things or how to get to them easily. Due to this lack of familiarity, people tend to overspend, not get exactly what they need, or go without. Sometimes, that special item you need cannot even be found in the area you are visiting! The solution is a holiday suitcase.

In your holiday suitcase, you should pack versions of your favorite, nostalgic items. Did you always hang stockings and have a tree for Christmas? Did you always have a menorah and dreidels for Hanukkah? Put travel-friendly versions of those things in the suitcase, with other festive touches that you might enjoy having on display.

Don’t damage the property!

One thing to keep in mind while making an Airbnb your own is that, even though it feels like home, it isn’t! Any decorating you do should be with a “no harm” policy concerning the walls, doors, floors, and tabletops. Some very important items to always have on hand are:

  1. Command Strips, to hang decor on walls without doing damage.
  2. Suction cup hooks for windows and appliances.
  3. Adhesive felt for the backs of wreath hangers and the bottoms of tabletop decorations.
  4. Simple, lightweight, string lights that can be easily hung-over curtain rods or bedposts.
  5. Lightweight extension cords and a power strip.

Another good idea is to look for already existing picture hangers, nails, or even holes from previous hangings that you can reuse in your decorating.

Leave it how you found it!

An Airbnb is often another individual’s home. These spaces can be very dear and personal to the hosts, so do not leave your mark! Make sure all your decorations go back home with you, (to enjoy next year!), and that any inadvertent damage is repaired. If there is tinsel, pine needles, or glitter on the floors, sweep up as much as you can so as not to overburden the people faced with cleaning up after you. This can save you a bad review or even a fine! If you do not plan to bring your decor back home, remove all the items anyway and either dispose of them or leave them neatly packed in a box for your host to use as he or she sees fit.

Most importantly, enjoy your time away and enjoy the people that you cherish.

Happy, home away from home, decorating!
