Upcycle for Earth Day – Turning Trash into Treasure

Posted on April 15th, 2020 by haynesbrosfurniture.

We live in a time when it is becoming increasingly important to remember to Reuse, Recycle and Renew. Right now, as we look forward to the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we have curated a few ideas that can help you do just that, in the most beautiful way! By using common household items that you might have otherwise thrown away, you can make an environmental and aesthetic impact in your own home.

Wine Cork Succulents

Wine cork succulents are one of our favorites because it combines beauty with wine! We are not trying to encourage people to drink more, but if you are a regular wine drinker, you should definitely start saving those corks because you can turn them into one of the cutest ideas in Reuse and Renew art projects!

The process is very simple: You just drill a hole in one end of a wine cork, fill the hole with soil, and stick a succulent cutting in! It’s that simple. Many people like to hot glue a strong magnet to the back of the cork and hang it on a refrigerator or other metal surface. For full instructions, click here.

Can Tab Lamp

If wine is not your thing, but soda is, we present to you this dramatic lamp shade, made entirely of soda can tabs! With a little time and creativity, this item creates a beautiful, quirky, industrial feel to a room and keeps hundreds of can tabs out of landfills. CD Shard Mosaic

Moving forward into a digital world has made things more convenient, more environmentally friendly, and more organized, but what should we do with the relics from outdated technologies? One item that can be used beautifully to create pieces of art around your home is the CD. That mirrored, pearl like backing can be turned into a lot of different mosaics, from bird baths to back splashes. For great ideas and full instructions, click here.

Key Bowl

Almost every home has a “junk drawer” where we store random items we do not necessarily want to throw away, but also do not know what to do with. Invariably you will find batteries that might be dead, lighters that also may, or may not, work, and of course, a collection of keys we can no longer identify or use. One of our favorite projects is this bowl made of old keys. It has a great industrial look, a beautiful shine and makes a wonderful, and interesting accessory. If you happen to know what the keys used to be for, it makes for a great keepsake, as well! To learn the process used to make this and other “old key” art, click here.

This Earth Day let us all take inventory of any wasteful habits, and look at the “trash” in our homes, with renewed eyes. If we can help you with any other home décor ideas, please visit us online at https://www.haynesbrosfurniture.com/
